Legal Case

Actos (pioglitazone) was once the bestselling Type-2 Diabetes medication in the world, but came under scrutiny after scientific studies revealed that people taking Actos have a much higher incidence of bladder cancer versus people taking other diabetes medications. Below is a history, highlights and timeline of events related to Actos, and bladder cancer.

People who took Actos and developed bladder cancer filed lawsuits alleging that Takeda Pharmaceuticals (the maker of Actos) was negligent in testing and developing the medication. It was further alleged that Takeda had knowledge of the bladder cancer risk and failed to provide a warning about the increased risk of bladder cancer.

A warning has now been added to the prescribing information about Actos; however, the warning may be insufficient and patients and doctors may still not fully be aware of the real risks of Actos. Lawsuits have now been filed. Takeda has settled for billions. Sufferers are entitled to compensation.

History of the Case

It all started when Actos (pioglitazone hydrochloride) is approved by the FDA for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. and Eli Lilly & Co. launch Actos jointly. It concluded in 2015, when Takeda announced that it will pay up to $2.4 billion to settle Actos lawsuits.
